Are you Afraid of Silence?

I shared in my yoga classes this morning a story about a man wearing a T-shirt that said, "The voices in my head have just gone quiet and I'm scared what they are planning next."
So often we fear the silence but inevitably we begin to learn that within that silence is the very medicine we need. Medicine for our nervous system, the medicine for our mind and ultimately the deep insights and unlimited creativity that exists within that matrix of inner quiet.
Living in such a busy world, we may find ourselves at a loss of silence so much that it has become uncomfortable. Instead of calming, silence can make you feel anxious without even knowing why.
Anxious thoughts can fill your mind when it's quiet. When you are busy your mind is focused on the task at hand. When you experience a moment of silence, your mind may take over with negative thoughts.
Instead of fighting negative thoughts with more noise, face them with prayer, affirmations, or a mantra. All of these things helps you to focus less on your problems.
Many times we replace silence with distractions. We run from the moment we’re living to focus on something else.
We like being busy and focused on many things at once. Maybe we feel like we’re getting a lot done. Being busy is not the same as being fruitful or productive. We think if we have time for silence we’re not getting things done when in actuality pausing for silence can energize us to get more done than we could have ever imagined.
Silence is like stepping into the unknown. It breeds uncertainty. By and large, the mind likes predicability and stability. Although that sounds good, it is a recipe for stagnation. The unknown is where freedom resides. If you want to grow and expand your consciousness it is essential to explore the layers of silence.
Try embracing silence instead of fearing it and notice the difference in your life.
