Equanimity in the Midst of Change

Change is one of life’s few guarantees, yet it often arrives in ways that unsettle us. It disrupts our routines, challenges our identities, and asks us to step beyond what is familiar. In these moments, the question is not whether change will happen—but how we will meet it.
Across cultures and traditions, the snake has long been a powerful symbol of transformation. Its quiet, deliberate shedding of skin represents renewal, rebirth, and the continual evolution of self. This process is neither quick nor comfortable. It is an arduous passage that requires patience, resilience, and an innate trust in the cycle of becoming.
The snake does not resist its transformation. It does not cling to its old skin. Instead, it surrenders to the process, emerging renewed. There is wisdom in this. Transformation, in our own lives, asks the same of us: to release what no longer serves, to move through discomfort, and to trust that something new is waiting on the other side.
May, often associated with the archetype of the snake, invites a heightened sense of self-awareness. It asks us to pause and reflect: How do we respond when life begins to shift beneath our feet? Do we resist, retreat, or react from old patterns? Or do we stand steady, grounded in inner strength?
This is where equanimity becomes essential.
Equanimity is not indifference, nor is it the absence of emotion. It is the ability to remain centered and balanced, even as life swirls with uncertainty. It is the quiet strength that allows us to observe our thoughts and reactions without being consumed by them. In this state, we are no longer driven by habitual patterns—drama, reactivity, or disruptive behavior—but instead guided by clarity and presence.
In Buddhist philosophy, this is often described as cultivating a “calm, radiant mind.” It is a mind that is no longer entangled in conditioned perceptions or rigid views. It is—liberated, open, and responsive rather than reactive.
Yet, achieving this state is not effortless. Change stirs things up. It can bring discomfort, fear, and the urge to escape. There is a powerful temptation to turn away, to cling to what is known, even if it no longer aligns with who we are becoming.
But what if we stayed?
What if, instead of running, we stood firmly in the midst of change—grounded, aware, and open?
Every experience we encounter carries the potential for growth. Even the most challenging moments hold within them an invitation: to expand, to learn, and to transform.
Life is not happening to us, but for us—each moment offering a doorway into deeper understanding and evolution.
In this sense, we are all invited to the same “party”—the ongoing process of growth and transformation. The invitation is always open. The only question is whether we choose to accept it.
Will we step into the unknown with courage, like the snake shedding its skin? Will we cultivate the equanimity needed to remain steady as we evolve? Will we release the old narratives and patterns that keep us confined?
Or will we turn away, choosing comfort over growth?
Transformation is not a single moment, but a continual unfolding. It asks for our presence, our courage, and our willingness to let go. And while the path may be uncertain, it is also rich with possibility.
So as change arises—as it inevitably will—consider meeting it with a calm, steady mind. Stand in your inner strength. Trust the process. And remember: shedding is not a loss, but a beginning.
The invitation stands.
Are you coming to the party?
